Collection: John Downing – Blacksmith

Blacksmithing can be traced back to 1500 BC when the process of forging and tempering iron ore was used to make various tools and household objects.

Although John Downing's forge in Thorney (Peterborough), doesn't date back that far, it was built in 1860 by the Duke of Bedford for his blacksmith.

John has owned and worked at the site for over 50 years, using traditional forging skills to create his pieces.  Some of the projects John has worked on includes extensive work for Peterborough Cathedral and many other churches in the area.

He makes a wide range of items including gates, railings, fireside fenders and weather veins as well as the functional and decorative items available on this site.
